Clean as a whistle! Station deep cleans near completion
MORE than 100 stations will be given a deep clean between January and March as Transport for Wales continues its £194m Station Improvement Vision
The investment will see stations across the Valleys, Cardiff area, west Wales and the Heart of Wales line being given a deep clean to give them a well deserved freshen up.
Over the coming weeks and months, contractors will be out cleaning footbridges, shelters, station furniture, fencing, lighting and car parks.
By the end of this latest phase of cleaning, all 247 stations managed by Transport for Wales across Wales and England will have received a spruce up.
Senior Project Manager for TfW Catherine Sweeney said: "We know what a massive difference a deep clean can make to a station. These stations are key gateways to the communities we serve and we are determined to get them looking their best.
"Already the cleaning work we've done has made a clear difference and we've seen positive feedback from our customers.
"Longer term, our Station Improvement Vision will see the biggest investment in those stations for decades as we work together to give our customers the railway they deserve."
Since the franchise began in October 2018, Transport for Wales has deep cleaned 143 stations. This is the third and final phase of that programme.
Deep cleaning is one of a number of key station improvements the £194 m Vision will deliver for customers. Over the next five years Transport for Wales will be installing new shelters and improved seating, additional cycle space, better signage and CCTV coverage.
TfW will also be creating at least 1,500 new parking spaces at stations and working closely with local authorities and the Welsh Government to promote active travel and to build a better public transport network for current and future generations.
As part of the vision, TfW is committing to working with small and medium sized businesses so we are reinvesting in the communities we serve to continue boosting local economies.
Ken Skates, Minister for Economy and Transport, said:
“This is welcome progress. Improving the appearance of our stations is important, and the Station Improvement Vision will contribute to achieving the railway we want for Wales and the Borders. It is part of our ambitious set of reforms that will put people’s expectations of our rail network at the heart of transformation.”
